Any ideas what kind of apple this may be?

Today I harvested the last of my apples off the one productive tree I currently have. This tree was here when I moved here, along with one other (which didn't do well this year), both standard size trees. It was totally loaded and although I didn't spray it with anything, I got so many large and bug-free apples off of it.

They are crisp and sweet "eating" apples, that's what I'd call them. Deep red skin, bright white flesh. Not tart enough for pies or apple butter. Just great for snacking on right out of hand and that's what we've been doing for a couple weeks now. :drool They started ripening nicely about the first half of September. They are not really good keepers, not long enough to bother overwintering. I tried frying some up and they were also not right for that purpose either, but they did hold their shape well and didn't go to mush in the pan.

I think I will juice the ones that are bruised or bugged and won't last long. I'm also going to try my hand at real apple cider vinegar this year. :D

If this apple looks/sounds familiar to you, I'd sure appreciate any input as to what it might be.... :)

I would say a Red Delicious.Rome would be shiny smooth skin No spots and soft and no flavor.LOL

I think you guys have nailed it. I looked it up and saw many pics that look just like it, and it's early ripening. What threw me is that these apples are so much bigger, softer to the bite and sweeter (no bitterness) than the red delicious I have gotten at the store. I quit buying them entirely because I thought they were horrible. I usually go for Gala, Rome, Fuji or (when I buy them buy the bushel) Golden Delicious for an "eating" apple. Is it just me, or are the Red Delicious you get at the store tough and bitter?

It has been many years since I bought a Red Delicious.

Like you Journey, I go for the Galas and the Golden Delicious for pies. Honey Crisp is a fairly new (and wonderful) find . . . and, once in awhile, a Fuji.

Really?!!?! Never heard of that.

My wife swears by Granny Smiths. Did some spies (spelling?) when we found some last year but for us nothing beats that tart make your mouth pucker kind of apple for pie. But then again Ill eat a Granny Smith just to eat one so maybe I'm the weird one.

I agree! I never buy them at the store because they are dry and tasteless. I was also told by a friend who has lived here for a long time that you should let them stay on the tree until after the frost - they then are juicier.
