I was looking at my Avatar for The Horse Forum and, in August when the picture was taken, my training area was fully green. I thought we were recovering this year but I'm chopping down a fruit tree that hasn't really recovered by the 2012 drought. I mowed my 3 acre North pasture yesterday and drove over a lot of dust. The Farmer's Almanac is predicting drier than normal for the Fall, Winter, 2014 Spring and Summer.
Anybody else in the Midwest--what do YOU think?

Depends some on what you call the Midwest. My wife went to the Midwest Weavers Association or whatever its officially called earlier this year in Kansas. A member from Minnesota asked her what she was doing there from Arkansas. To someone in Minnesota Arkansas is not in the Midwest. My wife was too polite to tell her that the original members of the Midwest Weavers Association were Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Arkansas.

Based on that Ill venture a response. Its dry here. We did get some good rain for about two weeks in late July-early August and it was fairly cool. I think that cool made a huge difference too in the evaporation rate. I sure enjoyed it. The grass was green when it is usually brown. But that rain was fairly hit or miss. We all got some and it was really nice, but some areas had enough to cause damaging flash floods that killed people while others just a few miles away got practically nothing.

Its nothing like the last two summers, but there are still areas around here that are really dry. I would not call it a drought here, but yeah, its dry. And we are losing trees, probably mostly from the last two summer's stress.

We live in near the Mississippi in IA (At the bend in the river!) YES it is dry. We had less than 1/2 an inch of rain in August. So far nothing for Sept. Nothing in the 10 day forecast. Grass is brown. Garden is struggling even with watering. It has been HOT. Upper 90's and Humid. Ugh.

Our local weather man says we are still 3.37" down for the year. We had a wet cool August, and plenty of rain in July, too, come to think of it. Last evening I watered my garden for the second time this season. Now it is dry and not much rain expected on the horizon.

Here in the Midwest. . . in Wisconsin. . .

After experiencing a drought last summer with less that 5 inches here all April - October, I hesitate to call this summer a drought. Yes, we are well below a normal rainfall for the year even if you don't discount the 8 inches all in two days in June. We've had 1/2 to 1 inch several times each month save August. That has been enough to keep everything alive and green if not thriving. We do need rain now, though and none is expected until Sunday or Monday. . . maybe.

Well guys ... here in SW Washington we had 0.1" of rain for the month of Aug. and in Sept. up to yesterday . Yesterday, at 5:58 PM the wind came up, temperatures dropped sharply and within minutes it started a nice soaking rain. By 6:00 AM this morning we had 1.13 " of rain and it will continue until noon. This storm is headed E, so Digit S et al. should be getting the crops in and umbrellas and mud boots out. :frow

Me, too. Seems like they keep putting it off, moving the expected rain days further down the week each day. SIGH! Small chance late Saturday then Sunday and Monday rain chances have jumped to Tuesday and Wednesday.
