I was looking at apple trees at Burnt Ridge's website and came across a fruit tree call Mayhaw . I had never heard of this fruit so started reading about it. What caught my eye was it is very tolerant of wet soil, so much that it claims some fruit harvested by boat. Nothing was said of taste only that makes a great jelly. Has anyone grown or eaten mayhaw fruit?

I believe the Mayhaw is a Hawthorn. The fruit are called Mayhaws because the tree fruits in May, usually. It's related to the rose family, and like rosehips I believe mayhaws are rich in Vitamin C. It is also an excellent cardio supplement- lowering high blood pressure and raising low blood pressure.

Mayhaws grow wild here, usually in low swampy areas. The fruit is about the size of a quarter, has a rosy blush on it and is tart. Like real tart. It makes a delicious jelly, it tastes the way a rose smells, if that makes any sense. I have made it before, but not in recent years. I bought a jar of Mayhaw jelly, but it was not good like home made, should've known better when list of ingredients included corn syrup.

This is not a tree that you would ever pick the fruit off and eat it. It must be cooked, juiced and processed into jelly or juice. Hittin' the river bottoms, picking Mayhaws used to be a fun thing to do, but moved away and haven't looked for another place to pick them.
