The deer in this forest eat any plant at all. I've seen them eat poison oak a lot, they know how to eat the wild salmonberries and wild blackberries whose thorns leave those tiny pieces you can't even see. They've eaten a friend's tomato plants that have nightshade in them. I've even seen absolutely and definitely deadly poisonous mushrooms one evening, gone the next morning after seeing deer there.

Deer seem immune to natural plant and fungus poisons!

Actually, I do wonder if those poisons carry over into deer meat.
Woah, Deer are TOUGH! You learn something new everyday :) and a bit of a scary thought though, but since most of the families around here have always managed to eat wild deer meat fine I'm thinking deer probably just have awesome digestive systems that are skilled at eliminating the toxins in the first place. Doesn't get in the body in the first place to cause problems :)

The odd thing is that humans seem to be the only ones who are alergic to poison ivy and poison oak. Wild animals gobble it down and birds eat the seeds. We used to put goats into the woods to clear out the poison oak. They go for it before any other plant. I wouldn't worry about the volatile oils being transferred to the animals meat; at least I've never heard of anyone suffering from eating an animal that was consuming it.
