I couldn't match it to "Spiders of New York State". For some reason these wild spiders never stand in quite the same way and in quite the same light as the ones getting photographed for scientific reports.

No Red I like spiders and anything else that eats mosquitoes !! My nephew and his friend, they think its some exotic verminous killer! But they think that of all spiders, like we live in the Amazon rain forest.

No red so that is good but he does look like he can handle himself, doesn't he. I have no idea what it is but you might send that photo to the entomology department of your state land grant university. I think that is Cornell. They should identify it for you.

How big is it? It looks sort of like a black widow, but with a very pale "violin" rather than red. I wonder if that is a possibility. What kind of environment was it found in?

@so lucky, without the red, it can't be a black widow (internet words, not mine), but I considered it might be a false black widow as they look much the same except for the red and live in Nyboy's area. Not quite enough like Nyboy's though.

@Nyboy, I am so proud to hear you had much more sense than screaming and running like a wuss. Except for black widows and brown recluse, we are not supposed to have dangerous spiders around here, so if I see a spider I expect it's a garden friend and let it be.

Spiders in the house are set outside if the weather allows, otherwise, the vaccuum eats them. Of course, right now any spiders unlucky enough to be caught are instant chick feed. The grands like watching the fuss putting a spider in with the chick ignites.

Black widows have the red violin on their belly. But the greyish portion on it's back doesn't fit. Although BW do have that large round, er, butt part, whatever the entomological term is for it.
It may not be native. When we moved up here from the San Diego area we brought one with us and it was on the wall in the hallway looking bewildered, right before I smashed it.
We were loaded with black widows down south, it just was the way things were and you get used to squishing them without a second thought. They are not runners, they just stay put obligingly while you get a paper towel or napkin to do the deed.

I'll bet @Wishin' could help you out with the ID.
