This is my first ever cold frame. One side is layered with rock and dirt for planting seeds and the other side is layered with rock, stone, and pebbles, creating a heat mass. that side will be used for "hardening" flats of seedlings. The center has stepping stones for easy access. the bed is 3'x8' So far I have broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, and cabbage that are ready to harden. Inside we have 4 kinds of peppers, 12 types of tomatoes, and several types of perennials started. This is also my first year starting everything from seed. So far I've only lost 6 plants that sprouted. Not too bad for a rookie. Yesterday was the first time outside for the broc., cauli., and brussel sprouts. today it's a little chilly so I'm not quite sure what to do.

I have just got Gel-2-Root delivered from Stokes - I've placed a started Bearbind seed in one of them to see what happens... It's so neat how you can see the roots!

I started my peppers and broccoli today... a couple days behind my schedule.. but.. they're planted now.. LOL

I was going to start cauliflower as well.. but apparently I didn't get any seeds! :barnie

Looks like I'm going to order some Purple of Scilily today from Baker Creek! I'm also ordering some borage and marigolds. For the marigolds to have an effect on the nematodes and beetles like some say, does it need to be planted in the same bed, or can it be planted in a container between the beds? We didn't notice a problem with nematodes last year.

ETA: I also ordered Grandview Catmint and Morning Glories (mix of blue hues, I tried to go for the reds, but hubs wanted blue.. LOL) I'm REALLY hoping that the catmint isn't a variety that ATTRACTS the cats! Tho... my dogs do like to try to chase them thru the fence! :p

When suddenly....

Last night, I planted....
-Heirloom Stocks (red)
-Cockscomb (red; self-saved seed)
-Honesty (self-saved seed)
-Elisabeth (blue)
-Unknown seed from a flower mix

Honesty and Cockscomb will be blooming by easter (those who keep them know how they are -- the bloom from almost germination until the decompose)
Stocks should be blooming around transplanting time, and I don't know about the mystery seed.
The Elisabeth should be blooming by the end of the millenium. Maybe  ...

Detlor Poultry, There is Princess Elisabeth this, and Queen Elisabeth that . . .

I know what stock, cockscomb and honesty are (honestly I do ;)).

What is "-Elisabeth (blue)?"

It's a type of Gentian. I think it's botanical name is Lisianthus or something like that (hence it's more english name, Elisabeth).

I have grown Lisianthus! It was 16 or 17 years ago, not long after I became aware that there was such a plant. They sure are pretty as cut flowers :).

Today, I planted 30 onion seeds of 3 different varieties in pots with a couple of house plants. Not very worried about 2 of them but the seed from the 3rd is from 2009 . May as well not mess up a flat of potting soil with seeds that don't have good germination rates . . .

Steve :)
