Marshall, the nursery replaced it. I will watch it closely this spring to see how it does. I'm a nervous nelly hoping it doesn't do/have the same thing as the last one. I'm hoping that with proper watering this time that it won't be stressed and be able to handle virus/diseases better.

Hoodat also brought up a good point about accumulated salts in the soil. If you aren't watering deeply the soil salts will not get flushed out and that could also cause tip burn. Particularly if your municipal water has a lot of chlorine.

Yes, and animal manures can also have a high salt content.
It may not be an issue where rainfall is good. When I lived in southern Cal. it was important to water deeply to leach the salts down, because rain is so infrequent there.
I used horse manure liberally ( and I had been told by a garden guru that horse was the highest in salt ) so had to make sure that when I watered it was nice and deep.

You could tell when a bed had been watered shallowly, the soil would get a rime on it from the salts and minerals in the water.

I have a fuji that I just planted this spring. I also have a tip problem...the stupid deer ate all of them! To make matters worse, some young spike came in the night and rubbed most of the bark off the bottom of the trunk :he I really hate deer.

Monty, when the satellite cameras see my vehicle going to tractor supply, lots of stock traders hurry to purchase stock for the chicken wire company! In fact, I have a sneakin suspicion the chicken wire companies breed deer and release them so more folks purchase chicken wire!

Kidding! But, you get the idea. One of my garden's nicknames is Fort Knox!

Chicken wire, wrestling with it, plenty of small fencing staples, plenty of poles.
I find chicken wire stays nicely tight at ten foot runs between poles. Beyond that it gets a top sag in the middle.
