We have an open kitchen/dining room that are divided by a counter/breakfast bar. The "kitchen table" is there & where we eat at. It works for us. We do some meal & canning prep there as well as homework, and use it as a general gathering area. But from the kitchen table you can see the stove & fridge. On one wall is a set of French doors that go out to the deck so it's a great place to get up & slowly watch the day start.
