Guineas where my first choice till I read how loud they are, being in the city I needed something not as loud. Guineas are also snake killing machines from what I read.

As far as the snake catching goes.. I KNOW that they will alert you, and will follow and pester it, but do they actually kill it?
I know very little about them, but would love to learn - they are very cool looking birds

When we used to let our chickens free range, we had very, very few bugs including ticks. I'm guessing that the guineas would be the same.

They are awful here too. My MIL has pulled 15-20 ticks off of one of her little foo-foo little dogs PER NIGHT! Luckily my dogs are in a fenced area that we treat every year.
I also got guineas last weekend but they have to stay inside for a couple more weeks AND I got 12 'lorp chicks. I think I might end up letting all the chickens free range once they are all full grown so they can help with the insect problem.

Free range birds would make tasty snacks for the coyotes and DH's naughty dog! The area I think he gets them is at our 2 acre lot. Partly wooded and neighboring properties. (We live in town.) Since we do not live out there having guiness wouldn't work. I have started adding garlic to his breakfast. We will see if that helps.
