For it, but don't carry or own a handgun. We usually just use shotgun or .22 here on the homestead for any killing that needs done. Not much going on out here in the country, so we don't have a need for carrying one as of yet.

@Smart Red that is the same car that was wrecked. We had it repaired and got it back with in about 12 days.

@baymule WV is trying to pass the open carry with out the permit. I think it is stupid too. Like you said Who knows???? No one would ever expect me to be carrying. I also have a can of red pepper spray in my purse.

@Beekissed I did get a dozen red roses for valentines day, but I have to agree the gun is WAY better.

I think there is a need for both concealed and open carry. My #2 son has a concealed permit, and a huge ferocious looking dog. He lives in a bad part of town, and all the neighbors know he has a dog and guns. Even the drug sellers next door know. Ironically, someone got shot on their front porch not long ago. No one saw a thing. The drug gangs don't rat each other out. Honor among thieves?

My friend Sue lives alone in a bad area. She went to goodwill and bought a beat pair of mens work boots and a large dog bowl. She painted the name fang on dog bowl, and placed both boots and bowl next to her door,this way anyone coming to her door thinks a man and dog named fang are inside.

The big, muddy pair of boots is something I suggested my BFF1 have outside her door back when she was living alone. Now she has three grandchildren -- oldest is 15 YO boy -- and a sometimes home son.

West Virginia already allows open carry without a permit. A permit is only required for concealed carry. What Dew was referring to is the push in the state legislature to eliminate the permit requirement for concealed carry.

Personally, I think the permit requirement should stay, with some changes. Firstly, the $100 fee is outrageous and is nothing more than a money making scheme. On the flip side, I think the permit requirement should extend to those carrying open as well as those carrying concealed, and should require at least a safety training course.

If I had my way, any carry permit would require at least 40 hours of training and a marksmanship test. Unfortunately, that would lead to "training courses" popping up everywhere and charging exuberant prices for the course. In my "perfect world", the State would schedule courses in every county and charge a reasonable fee to attend. The course would be uniform across the State and only State certified instructors could teach. Also, annual training certifications should be met. For instance, at least 8 hours of annual training in handgun safety and marksmanship to keep safety at the forefront, or maybe classes on when or when not to pull your weapon could be offered.

Topics covered must include the ramifications, both legal and emotional, of using your weapon in self defense.

I strongly believe in an armed public, however it should be a well trained public. A permitted idiot with a gun is still an idiot with a gun.

By the time Dew is carrying, she will be well trained.

We had a somewhat related discussion recently. I'll repeat or elaborate on a few things I said. If you are not willing to shoot someone, and shoot to kill, don't carry a gun. There are already enough guns out there in the hands of the bad guys. Don't just carry one so they can take it away. Don't shoot to disarm or wound. Shoot to stop them, period. It's not a game, they are not toys. They are deadly serious. Just having one does not keep you safe, it just raised the stakes.

The question was asked, could you really shoot someone? I don't know because I've never been in that situation, not even when I was in the army, but I sure think I could in the right circumstances. That's basically take a life to save a life. I consider some lives more valuable than others.

In line with Monty's comments, don't carry a gun unless you are comfortable handling it. Know how it works and be able to hit what you are shooting at. And know when to use it.

I don't have a handgun or a carry permit. I'm really not that worried in public. My .22 is mainly for a few varmints, very few actually. My go-to is a pump action 12 gauge. It has limited range, which is good for the horses and cows that live out here, but it is also very effective within its range. Frankly, if I had a choice, I'd much rather face a .22 than a 12 gauge.

I agree with you Ridge. I carry when I go out in the woods alone, not necessarily because I'm worried about people. I'm not necessarily worried about wild animals either. But I'd rather expect the best and be prepared for the worst. I also carry bear spray, but if the wind is against you it's going to do you as much harm as the critter your trying to persuade.

I'd have to carry a rifle then. I was aware of the open carry law, but my problem is that I don't own a handgun. Getting my concealed carry permit is on the future to-do list though. Part of why we haven't gotten our permits is because we have not wanted to spend the money on a handgun just yet until we have the extra. (We've worked hard and been very frugal to eliminate all consumer debt. Only debt we have is our mortgage now. DH would have liked to have bought a handgun before now, due to peer pressure from my BIL, but I was opposed to putting it on credit.) If anyone breaks into the house, they will meet the barrel of a rifle though. I worry more about break-ins than I do being assaulted out in public, at least in our rural area. Lots of druggies breaking into houses and cars looking for quick cash. Most are unarmed, just looking for an easy score.
