I'm sure there are plenty of happy woodchucks in the thousands of acres of woodland in our state.
Our DNR says not to relocate them because of their increasing population and the damage they do. They can move 700 pounds of soil for their 20 to 30 foot long burrow with multiple chambers. They can clean out a garden in 2 days or less... would you like to share a yard with him?
ETA: If you have ever been charged by a big one, because you happen to be standing too close to it's den, they tend to lose their cuteness real quick!
For goodness sake, don't let your granddaughter see one of those cute and cuddly (looking) things or you'll be feeding it forever. They really do a lot of damage for their size and looks. Cute in a zoo or photo, but the best ones are in someone else's yard or you'll be sorry.
When my wife realized that I could not grow her favorite green beans because a groundhog had found them and was eating them off as they sprouted, she strongly encouraged me to eliminate it. Until then, she thought they were cute.
LOL, several years ago we waged war on a groundhog that had set up housekeeping under the shed. Did you know they can climb trees? (Dog chased one up there. ) They did a real number on the garden, a bite out of EVERYTHING. Melon, squash, gourd, beans. everything. What they did not damage DH did trying to get rid of them. Shot the water barrel. moved the shed with explosives, etc... funny now. Not then.
