i am not growing many greens here because Mom won't eat them. if someone else grows them and i can try them then at least in the future i'd know what they were and if i liked them. in a lot of cases i do. :)

i'm going to see this year if i can get Mom to try some pea shoots/leaves. we'll see how that goes... :)

Wow, some of you really know your asian greens!

I love eggplant in chinese dishes. Anyone have a good recipe for it?

Mary

i really like it about any way i've had it. baba ghanoush is easy and i like it.

all i do different is either i use a little peanut butter instead of the tahini or i leave it out entirely. it doesn't matter that much to me. i also don't add salt. any parsleys or dill are good in any amount, same as cilantro.

I'd love to be helpful to read any Chinese/Japanese for you; just upload a photo, and I can explain.
Oh, where were you when I had my anime dilemma!

I was writing a sort of manga story for some people on another group, and needed to know the Japanese word for "loafer" (as in the type of shoe). I asked around and NO ONE knew it. I finally managed to find ANOTHER Japanese children's book (about shoes this time) and it was written on the inside of the cover (it turns out, it is "rofa" i.e. exactly the same word as in English, adjusting for the R/L interchangeability. )

I may get back to you whenever I start going back to NYC, as despite everyone's help on my side, I think I STILL may have trouble ordering the pork and fennel buns I promised our neighbors (the problem is the the pork and fennel buns are listed in the same line as the pork and green bean buns on the menu, and since the owners of the stand don't really speak any English (and don't like to come out to the front of the stall to look, the only way to get the right ones reliably is to be able to SAY the name in Chinese)

you can't bring a picture (of the finished item, plus a shot of the ingredients)?

Thank god I'm doing most of the story in ENGLISH, and just using Japanese for some of the names. It was hard enough finding out loafer, if I had to do the whole story in Japanese, and needed to describe every character's clothing, I'd also have to find out the words for oxfords and wingtips. Oh and saddle shoes, if there even IS one (because of the fact it was being rebuilt in the 50's, saddle shoes largely passed Japan by in fashion trends, and are still more or less unknown there.)

Well, all the buns look the same from the outside. I suppose I could try and bring a picture of fennel tops, but I'm not sure Chinese fennel looks the same as ours.

Actually, I'm not 100% sure the stuff in the buns IS fennel. "Fennel" and "Dill" are pretty interchangeable in Chinese cooking, and equally unknown to most of them (its really only used way up North, in the Tianjin area, and what they use is sort of midway between the two). Back when it was still in business Dumpling Galaxy (across the street, and a little bit up) had dumplings with the same stuff, and they called it dill on the menu (actually, Dumpling Galaxy had dumplings with pretty much EVERTHING in them, they made over 100 kinds).
