I have been wondering if my self-sown asparagus seedlings are making my bed a bit too dense in spots. It certainly can help fill in holes if you lose a plant or two to a difficult winter.
Also, make sure your straw for mulch doesn't have many seed heads in it (and avoid hay, which definitely does). I had that happen once and had to spent a lot of time weeding.
