salt water to kill weeds in asparagus. Asparagus in the wild grows along oceans in ocean water--or so I've been told.

I moved my asparagus bed after 20 years. Lost a lot of starts but kept a lot as well. Asparagus is a heavy nitrogen feeder.

Yes, it is very delicious and easy to grow! I had a large bed of it several years ago and lost it when I abandoned the garden for a few years. We dug up 2 very large clumps at my sister's yesterday, one of which was around 25 years old! It was difficult to move but we did it. Hoping to have bearing plants this very spring! We didn't disturb it any more than we had to in the move, didn't attempt to divide or anything like that. We will see what happens in a month or so....:tools

Wow that is a lot of info. I think I am going to try Mary Washington in a raised bed. And Lesa I am a Taurus so I don't have to worry about changing my mind. It takes me a long time to make a decision. I have to mull it around for several days but once I have made it, that's it. I think they call it stubborn.

Ha ha, I'm a red headed Taurus, my hubby says it's called trouble.
I just planted my first asparagus (2 year old roots) a couple of weeks ago in sort of a semi raised beds, we just tilled up the whole area and added the top soil from the paths to the bed. So far a couple have sprouted. I'm just going to spend the next year weeding, watering and waiting.

Heh, another Taurus here...lots of us have birthdays coming up!! :)

I love asparagus, but havent had a good harvest yet. Got some crowns established, then we moved so i brought them with us, and am still waiting for them to get more robust. I also added some asparagus starts last year that i sprouted, to fill out the raised bed (eventually). Maybe this spring i will get some!

Skeeter09 just posted about getting all male roots for a new bed, do I need to eliminate the female plants and how do you do that. I am going to have to do a lot more research on this and I think I am going to teach my husband and make it his asparagus bed. ;)

You might look through this article. It discusses the advantages of male versus female plants.

As far as I am concerned, I'm not worried about male versus female, but I'm not growing them commercially. I don't try to preserve asparagus, just eat it fresh, and mine gives me plenty of fresh asparagus in season.
