What is with this week??
Woke up to the ducks quacking oddly, which equals that there was a predator. LGD started to bark and reinforce the ducks' calls.
I look out the window and see a great blue heron, standing by my pond, carefully choosing which of my poor Koi it wanted to snack on!
Oh, Hell no!!!
Wish I could of jumped through the window at it! Instead, I beat on the window and it spooked enough to fly off the property. Ran out to get my net and there it was, creeping it's way back to see if it was safe for it to come back and hunt my fish! >=/ No damned way! Yelled and mock charged it, it flew away and the LGD took over with escorting it further off property!
Got my net up! Pictured.
Hope the a-hole gets stuck if he tries to eat my Koi again!!

I jinxed myself by mentioning seeing it by the creek and not my pond. Tch!

What a lovely little pond! I hope your netting works. I love the blue herons, love to see them and such, but if they were eating my expensive koi, I'd figure out a way to keep them out too. Could be your dog will see them as a threat now that you've shown him to chase them and maybe he'll take up where you left off.

Dog is fenced off from the yard the pond is in, since the sheep will come in and eat the hay I'm storing there as well.
I tucked the edges by the plants, so hopefully it won't find a way in.

There is a couple living on 8 acre place, just 3 miles from our home here in Wa. ,with a fairly large Koi pond next to their house. Bordering their land is a water flowing creek and swamp land on the other side of the dreek. What they did to keep the herons from snacking on their koi is ... they have a field fence around it, and then they used 100 pound test fish line crisscrossed ( no more than 18 " between the crisscossing ) 8 - 10 feet over the pond. Herons land on their house and trees to ponder how they could get a meal, but to no avail now for 3 years. Hummingbirds and other small song birds come daily to have a drink from the pond and the hummingbirds have a snack from sugar water feeders, while th song birds feast on seeds from hanging feeders.

I can't stand Blue Herons. I dealt with them on the Texas coast, and am now dealing with them here in WV. They will stroll along stream beds eating every single minnow and crawdad they can find. They've made it impossible for smallmouth bass to live in many creeks because of a lack of food. I suggest a shotgun for the next visit. It's the only thing that will keep it away permanently.

Funny how in a recent thread we were talking about how cool blue herons are. Now they are devil birds.
I wonder if there is a certain time of year that they are most voracious. Feeding young in the nest, maybe?
Perhaps @secuono can find a netting arrangement that will get her through the worst times. Surely it won't have to be left up year round?

Different experiences, different view points. Personally, I would rather see them around. My BFF1 neighbor with a good sized spring-fed pond has a different 'druther'. She complains about turtles, too. Seems they do more damage to her attempts to stock the pond than do cranes and herons.
