Well Steve, it makes sense to my simple mind. These "resistant starch" foods are just unrefined, so they digest slower and have more of the nutrients your body needs, keeping the furnace happy for a longer stretch. :p

Low fat is crap and dangerous. Essential fatty acids are what we get from fat. Without them we get sick and tend to die. The word "essential" is a key here. As for resistant starch...yeah..good luck with that. No such thing as an essential starch or carbohydrate.

Read "Good Calories Bad Calories" or "Why we get fat and what to do about it" both by Gary Taubes if you want to truly understand the science behind weight gain and how to avoid falling for stuff like this in the future.

Gary Taubes is a journalist with a degree in aerospace engineering.

Janine Higgins, who is probably behind this 4,451 subject research study at the University of Colorado, has a PhD in biochemistry and has done peer evaluated research on starches in diets for years. She is the nutrition research director at the U of C.

You wouldn't have far to go wifezilla to throw crap.

Well since we are talking about diets... I have lost 32 pounds on WW. I would say that it is low fat with healthy essentials and is definately high in fiber. But mostly portion control.

On that note I just canceled my membership. I have having trouble going to the meetings and dealing with my children and all their activities. I am scared. Very scared about this decision. I know the plan and I feel like it is something I can live with the rest of my life. But what if all my works goes back to gaining. Scared. I am scared.

:thumbsup
Way to go Obsessed!
Congratulations on your success! Maybe you could work out something with a friend where you could be accountable to each other. Maybe someone who's done WW too? Since you already know what it takes, a little mutual encouragement might be all you need to stay on track.

What do you think about TOPS, O?

I don't believe that they are espousing any one diet; just encouraging each other in their efforts. Perhaps you can find someone there who can work with you on that "mutual encouragement."

Here's their look-up page for a group near you:

And, congratulations!

I would think that WW and TOPs are very similar WW is about a balanced and nutritional diet with heavy amounts of moderation. My problems is my childrens we have two kids in soccer and Tball that it makes finding a meeting difficult. At least for the next 3 months. I figured since I know the WW plan I will continue doing it and if I don't see the results then I will just go back. But thanks for the link

Gary Taubes is a journalist with a very big pedigree. His research is impeccable, easily verifiable and readily available. He is the one that busted open the fusion scam back in the late 80's or early 90's. He got involved with diet research when another scientist told him "you think that science was bad, you should check out the diet industry!". He is now busting wide the horrible science behind most of the diet recommendations we get today...especially the recommendation to eat low fat.

If you don't like him as a source, there are plenty others...

This is the Doctor who invented the heart calcium scan...

An article about Dr. Weil, who used to pan low carb and then after researching, had an about face....

On an evolutionary basis, humans did not eat low fat. They also did not eat boatloads of carbohydrates, let alone processed carbohydrates. The Weston Price foundation is a great source for evolutionary eating. Dr. Price traveled the world and documented many cultures who did not have access to western foods, what they ate, and how their health was superior to cultures that ate sugars and flours. The starches and grains these cultures ate were fermented and sprouted which changes them from something nutritionally detrimental to a very healthy food.

One thing they all had in common was liberal consumption of natural healthy fats like butter, lard, coconut oil, olive oil, etc.... NOT low fat.

Where did the recommendation to eat low fat come from in the first place? One guy. Ancel Keys and his 7 nations study. Too bad he fudged his numbers.

I guess we could probably toss studies and "pedigrees" around indefinitely to support our views...

You lost me there, evolution is not provable, last time I checked it was still a theory.
