So glad your safe I heard Lindale Tx and couldn't remember if you moved there or from there. Must have been scary not knowing how farm was with all the hard work you put into the place. Do you have a generator ? I bought a used one on CL for $200 I think I got my money worth from it a long time ago.

It's so funny to me that itty bitty Lindale, Texas made the national news. There were more than 40 homes damaged in this storm. One poor family's house got hit by TWELVE TREES that fell on their house. It was a total wipe out. They were huddled in the hallway, the only part of the house that wasn't destroyed. The woman said the Lord was holding up the walls, protecting them.

@Nyboy We had a generator before, but in hurricane country, if there is no power, then there is no power for the entire area and getting gas to run the generator can be quite the chore. Switching from hurricane country to tornado country has it's advantages, if power is off at our house, then there is power somewhere else close by.

In my area, lots of places are selling tornado shelters. The kind you drop in a hole in the ground. My step SIL used to sell them, but I think he has passed that business along to someone else. He has his fingers in several pies right now.

I think an in-ground shelter is a great idea. You could use it as a root cellar too.
Then you wouldn't have to worry about stocking it with emergency food. :p

Force of water ...

It seems like there should be something that could be done to an existing home to create a safe room.

There should be building material such that a very secure "box" could be built within a small room like a closet. Obviously, one could do interior masonry walls if an adequate foundation is installed. Steel is heavy. But, there are carbon fiber reinforced polyester parts for engines! They use reinforced polyester for adding loadbearing strength to bridges.

It just seems like there should be some type of paneling and flooring to make very strong walls, ceiling and floor. The interior door could be replaced with an exterior, steel door. A room is a box, after all. Make a box in a box ...
