Met son in law in Kingwood yesterday to pickup the two little granddaughters. The 15 year old is staying with his cousin. The girls lost no time playing with the dogs.

Sheba commanded her servant to rub tummy!

Sentry and Buford will accept any kind of attention, and lots of it. Carson gets house time, but plainly thinks that’s not enough.

This afternoon we hung out with the dogs and sheep. Beautiful day!

We went to the Mission Tejas State Park today, it’s only 23 miles away. We walked trails, examined the mission replica built in 1936 to commemorate the Texas Centennial, 100 years of independence.

There was an old way station, log home built in 1828 on the road between Nacogdoches and San Antonio. 3 rooms, 3 fireplaces and 3 sleeping lofts. I explained how there was no electricity, running water or bathrooms. Boiling laundry in a big iron cauldron outside, no closet’s because people only had 2 sets of clothes, maybe 3. We stood in the dog run and felt the breeze.

Word of the day:

Doody.

Doody paired with any other word, sends 2 little girls into spasms of giggles and laughs.

Doody used in a phrase elicits even more spastic giggles.

You called me Doody face!
Because you are a Doody face!

Giggles, shrieks and laughter comes from the back seat.

Doody makes a great car game. DD has a van with a video player, complete with headphones. The well behaved little TV Zombies ride for hours, quiet and motionless. I vastly prefer the Doody game!

Doody dog!
Doody doo doo!

Their giggles and laughs were infectious and I laughed too. They never wound down, they threw out words that don’t go with Doody and screamed with laughter.

Doody is a car game.

We went to the Lufkin zoo yesterday. Admission for the 3 of us was $14. The walkways are shady, plenty of places to sit and enjoy.

Peacocks roam the zoo at will. They are beautiful and add to the zoo experience.

There were even 2 white ones.

There are observation decks, covered, with tables and chairs. This was the observation deck for the rhino, but the girls were more excited to see the line of turtles.

We had lunch, then went to the Texas Forestry Museum. Admission was free, they took donations, so I put a donation in the jar.

There was a mock up of a saw mill house. Men used to work at the mill, and could rent a house, basically a shack. The girls loved playing in it. There were even costumes hanging on pegs on the wall.

We went outside. There was old equipment they could climb on, even an old steam locomotive and caboose. The caboose was open and we went in. There was a small place to stand in the locomotive.

Log skidder.

They climbed all over everything out there like 2 monkeys. There was a nature walk trail and we did that too.

Went to Walmart to get hot dogs and fixin’s for the now 8 year old’s birthday campfire hot dog cook out Friday evening. Then home, playing with dogs and sheep until time to go in. We had a fun day.

We have been making pies. First we made pie crust dough. Then we mixed up a pumpkin pie filling and put it in the oven. Next we made a lemon chess pie. They liked pretending that they lived 100 years ago yesterday, so I got out my antique hand rotary beaters. No electricity!

Cream the butter and sugar. That took awhile!

I explained that before those were invented, women had to use a spoon.
We cut lemons in half and hand juiced them.

A neighbor brought me 2 goose eggs this morning!

We used them plus 2 chicken eggs.

We hand beat them with a fork, then added to the mixture.

Pumpkin pie just came out of the oven! Lemon chess pie just went in!

Why is your zoo so cheap?! It's about $60 to go to the zoo here!
