I had tried 2 or 3 others in the chicory family. (That is not counting dandelions, which Bay' enjoys ;).)

Witloof chicory -- too bitter.

Radicchio -- too bitter!

I have been eating escarole in my sandwiches at the garden. That's worked out since there was all this kale overwintered for soup and the lettuce didn't have a good start in the hoop house. Now, things can change a bit with the open garden coming along. Still, the escarole will be available for several more months.

I pulled onions yesterday, carrots and beets today. I canned the beets, got 4 pints. The carrots were bitter. We’ll, crap. :he I gave them to the pigs.

We have been picking wild plums in the fence rows. I have 2 1/2 gallons of juice in the refrigerator now. Wild plum jam is the best! This is what we picked yesterday.

I pulled some rutabagas today and boiled them for supper. Salt and pepper, they were good. I’m going to pull the rest and can them.
