In mid July I built a 4' x 4' raised bed for Ava to grow whatever she wanted in. She wanted to try beans, so I bought two packets before they put the seeds away thinking she might just make it. The darn plants are so loaded with beans they can no longer stand up, and tomorrow she is going to have to start picking beans. She is already planning on melons next spring. ;)

She has your genetics JackB! What a wonderful success for her! Our beans have gone crazy this year, I would say best harvest ever. We grew tendergreens. If anyone can grow melons, Ava can! I have good luck with the sugarbabies.

Her latest acquisition is a pitcher plant. She has to check it every time she comes to see if it caught a bug yet. Fortunately, there are not many bugs in my greenhouse, so I may have to go hunting for one. She starts school full time next week, and I am going to be lost without her here everyday. She has been my gardening assistant for five years now. :/ How quickly they grow.

Well with you as her coach, how can Ava go wrong. I can't believe that in a month's time she already has that many to harvest. Maybe she should come over here and help me out! As yours goes on to school my granddaughter will be starting preschool here. I'm looking forward to it and dreading it at the same time! lol. I hope she listens to her teacher and not think she can get away with things just because she's also Ninny.

Mary, I hardly think you, or your granddaughter, are Ninnys. We have had extremely hot weather and almost continuous sunshine, that may have helped Ava's beans produce so well. I am hoping the warm spell continues well into the fall so I can get more cucumbers from the greenhouse. Ava can eat a whole pickle with her lunch.

No Jack, were not ninnys! Years ago, I had a preschooler who couldn't say Mary and would call me ninny. My daughter liked it and wanted Olivia to call me that. So in this house, were ninny and papa. :)

Ava has always called my wife Theresa Gay Gay. We have no idea where that came from so we remain Gay Gay and Pop.

Jack, will your granddaughter come to your house after school? If you don't continue to see her daily, it will be like losing an arm! Or at least a piece of your heart.

My son and his wife live several miles away, but both work in Troy where we live. They have been dropping Ava off on the way to work, and picking her up after work. Ava will be going to school with her cousin, who lives very close to her, and she will go to his home after school until her mother picks her up. So, going forward, we will only be seeing her on days off and vacations. It is going to be "empty nest syndrome" all over again, sadly.

Today Ava picked her first crop and I have NEVER seen her so excited about gardening. She kept repeating "Free Food!". This was certainly a project worth doing. :)
