I never heard of cooking egg shells like that...that's a new one on me....:bow ...
I put my egg shells in my compost...I have crushed seashells in my garden for calcium too...and every so often if we hit the lottery we will have lobster :love and I will compost the shells...
I know epsom salts is good for plants...I did not have BER last year on my tomatoes [jinks] but I did on my summer squash...

Yuck! Try rotenone-it is organic and works very well.

For flea beetles on the eggplant I just go for the Sevin. I tried other things but just decided if I want eggplant I have to just do it. It's one of the very few times I resort to any pesticide.

Ashing the Eggshells releases the Calcium to a quicker release form. Cooking them well leaves some in slow rerlease.

Mama Chicken, meantime, be adding eggshell to your garden, as many as you can. Add them to your compost, add them to your fireplace to make "primo" ash.

See if you can get bone meal, and put it where your tomatoes will be next year.

Meantime, be looking for a roma tomato known not to get BER very easily.

my two cents' worth:

1. I use a hefty handful or two of the oyster shell from the chicken supplies in every planting hole. Also have broadcast the stuff when tilling in lime. Stopped the BER in tomatoes and peppers...although this year is the first I'm really trying the Roma type tomato.

2. Flea beetles did in all the eggplant until I used basil. Carpet the bed with basil plants (I start a packet of mixed basil in a big open flat), and when the basil is large enough, tuck in the eggplants at about 6 basil to one eggplant. I spray/dust several times until the eggplant is established and the basil engulfs everything. The last two years this worked well enough to get a decent crop.

Well, I did another dose of compost tea, added some crushed oyster shell around each plant, and pulled off all of the icky tomatoes. There are now tons of new tomatoes growing and they are all fine. :weee
Thanks for the advice everyone, next year I'll remember to add the oyster shell when I plant, rather than having to correct the problem after the fact.

Rotenone is a good all around organic spray.

I don't like eggplant, I grew them for my hubby. If they die I won't care one little bit. I'd rather deal with losing the 6 eggplants than put poison in my garden.
