I would like to recommend the book The Backyard Homestead by Carleen Madigan. It is made up of different books by Storey Publishing edited into one convenient, one stop guide. It has a very nice gardening section, a section on fruit and nut trees, and an animal section with instructions on keeping poultry, goats, cattle, and pigs. It is aimed at people with a small amount of land (less than an acre).

It is available at Amazon for $12.89. http://www.amazon.com/Backyard-Homestead-Produce-food-quarter/dp/1603421386

I would highly recommend it.

My eyes were really opened by this book! The back cover, where it lists all the food that can be grown on a 1/4 acre homestead, is mind-boggling. I had not considered growing grain for home use until I read about in Backyard Homesteading. It's a great overview of what can be accomplished on a small acreage.
