Okay, I don't know much about veggies on the barbeque but I'm learning something about veggies and extreme heat.

Maybe, it wouldn't have been extreme some places but triple digitS' in June and lots of high 90's following looked to me like it would kick the legs right out from under some of the spring-planted crops.

The broccoli looked like it would just give up! Some fertilizing, hilling around the plants, plenty of sprinkler water:

By the way, that isn't my garden soil. I set my 3 gallon bucket down on the neighbor's dirt driveway ;).

The plants were delayed. The potatoes were delayed, also. I'm digging them now rather than waiting for the "earlies." It is a mistake in terms of production but that's okay.

steve that is some very delicious looking broccoli... might do a foil package with some leeks and potatoes seasoned with butter and salt and pepper on the grill.

Oh hey!

I've dug 4 potato plants over the last several days - don't want to rush into anything like that ;).

The leeks haven't grown much in all the heat but they must be nearly as big around as my thumb ...

:) Steve

Yes, we've eaten broccoli on the grill on our salt block a lot this summer! Those salt blocks are fun, and are yummy for veggies. The one downside is you're supposed to warm them slowly, so 10 min on low, 10 min on med, 10 on high means 30 minutes planning ahead of time. Asparagus is DELICIOUS on them!

Salt block? Can you use them on a charcoal grill?

Hmmm, yeah I would think so if you put them on right when you light the charcoal, so they warm up slow. Lots of charcoal, i think the blocks are supposed to get really hot.

@NwMtGardener , I had never heard of grilling on a salt block. How interesting! I use the pink Himalayan coarse salt. Does the salt block also impart extra minerals to your food too? I am going to have to read more about this...

NwMtGardener, I inherited a Himalayan pink salt block that was used for a photo shoot but I'm scared to use it. It's so pretty that I don't want to ruin it.

OK you guys. Someone has to fill me in on what you're talking about.

Salt block?
Pink salt from the Himalayan mountains? Are you sure its not fuchsia ;)
On the grill?
Hmmmmmm, did I dream this?

Same dream, Smiles! I know the Phoenicians used salt blocks when cooking on the beach -- that lead to the discovery of glass -- but I've not heard nor seen anyone cooking on salt, only with it.
