Brussel Sprouts ...where to start them?

I hate brussel sprouts, and will most likely not be eating these. However, they look fun, so I'll be growing them instead.

Should I start them outside, or inside? Any special suggestions?

Go ahead and plant them in the ground. I would do it now, since they aren't going to appreciate your hot summers. They are very easy to grow- basically I plant them and forget them, until late summer, early fall. I think you will find them delicious- like most of what we grow, it is so different from the grocery store quality! I have a great recipe for a Brussels Sprout slaw, that is wonderful. Remind me when you harvest!

We have better luck growing them for Fall here in our NC climate. Everytime we've planted them in Spring, we only ended up disappointed.

Now we plant them in late August (from started transplants). They're one of DH's dear favorites. We never have a Fall garden without them.

My Dad (as a PA gardener), on the other hand, started them in Spring with his broccoli, cauliflower and other Fall crops. That's similar to Lesa's NY climate.

Edit: ooppssss.....disappointed, not dissappointed

I've never grown them either because of food-trauma growing up :p !
But I had a client who tosses them in a little oil, seasons them and then broils them on a cookie sheet and says they taste sweet and nutty that way. Almost made we want to plant them...

They are good sauteed with a little butter, garlic, and lemon juice.

You can also substitute them for cabbage in cole slaw, egg rolls, or whatever you use cabbage for.

let me guess...someone likes to over cook them and stink up the house! my mom does that and i always disliked them because of that smell. i'm going to give them a shot this year too and been thinking of trying them in a slaw!

I grew some this fall. I started them in early Sept and they lived all the way threw winter. I cut them down a few days ago when I noticed that the cabbage moths started to attack them. I was not very impressed. For all that time growing I got like maybe 20 per stalk. And that just wasn't enough in my opinion. Especially when you compare them to broccoli where I got the first harvest and tons of multiple harvest. Those were also planted the same time and are still alive.

On the other hand Brussel Sprouts are really expensive and even with 20 they were mightly tasty... and If I don't let anyone else eat them but me then.....I guess they were really worth it.

I like to cut them in half. Put them on a cookie sheet, drizzle some olive oil, salt, and pepper and toss. Roast them in a 400* oven till tender. Then I saute some pancetta and add the brussel sprouts. Very tasty!:p (What is nice is that I get the panchetta already diced up at Trader Joe's.)

That also sounds like a good way to cook them Mary, I'll get some from the Farmers Mkt this summer and try them like that. Maybe next year I'll try growing them!
