How many green beans do you want? I plant one row about 25' long, spacing about 4" apart-too close so sue me-and get enough for several families.

I grow tenderrettes and Roma II. I'd grow all Roma II if someone would not nag at me.......

My row is about 23 feet long and it will be 2 feet wide. I never grew Roma II or Tenderrettes. Usually, I grow Jade, but I forgot to order them and I am going to plant Blue Lake and some yellow wax. You have one row 4 inches apart. Major has 9 in 3 feet, so that is about the same and then he thins to 7. His are 10 inches apart, so I could have 2 rows in my 2 foot wide bed 4 inches apart. That is the plan! I want a million green beans. I plant pole beans too. :celebrate

I do rows, but have tried 3 feet wide beans and have about 2 inches apart without luck. Read several places this is how you do wide row beans.

Bean seed planted two inches apart is crowding the plants much too much. I do single rows with seeds planted 7 inches apart in the row. Since I cultivated with a super bronco roto-tiller my rows are 28 inches apart.

I can see the 12 apart double row system with each double row sepearted with about 30 inches. I have often thought about doing that to get more beans out of my space. However space seeds at least 7 inches apart. The plants need some space for good development.

Mine are planted closer since I don't cultivate or walk on the bed. I sit beside it and weed at my leisure as needed. Also, no need for rows. I tend to scatter on the ground and push in with a green thumb, moving the too-close seeds when needed.

I often drive in stakes around the beds of bush beans.

About 16" above the soil, I can run twine.

The plants are not vining but this leaves the paths available for walking instead of plants, heavy with beans, flopping out into it.

I think that was my problem before, flopping over plants. I have enough room that I can do the twine and stakes. Thank you.

I don't think I even have room for bush beans this year. Hopefully the pole beans will grow fast!
That's a great idea about the stakes, Steve.
