Mary, it is up to you how you grow them. If you have a fence, you can train them up the fence. I let mine grow and then put the vine where it is convenient for me. As Bills says, you can always prune. Particularly late in the season, when you know there is no chance of ripening. I saw a flower on mine yesterday- no way that is going to have time...I would try one hill of them and see how you like them.
