With how cold and windy it's been - bring on the sunshine! And can't wait until everything's thawed out!

You better keep those seed packets in a safe place Kate (or should I call you Curly?). You may wake up in the morning to find that they're missing. ;)

Chickie - do you start your corn seed? I'd never heard of it before, but our neighbor who runs an orchard suggested it. It actually has worked really well to make sure we don't have gaps where seeds don't germinate.

i've bought corn that was started by someone else but have not tried to start mine from seed in containers. i may with this type since it is a popcorn that can take a long time to grow. i've also tried growing corn by direct seeding, however corn always seems to dry out for me because they are so dependent on lots of water and i have planted them in areas that gets too dry and not within reach of my garden hose and sprinkler. this year and on this property i have a really good area to grow them in. :p

I hope spring comes soon for you. I grow stuff all year around here, I don't know how I would do with no garden in the winter. Winter garden is when I can grow lettuce, onions, turnips, mustard greens, collards, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and probably some more stuff I can't remember right now.

On the other hand, maybe doing all the gardening in the spring/summer and taking off for a few months may not be a bad thing......

I am starting to get my orders in, can't wait to plant them!!

Maybe if you will have a few dreams about enjoying those Kellogg's Breakfast tomatoes, sitting out on that cool new deck in September. So, you will be okay for a few more weeks until you can see those seeds sprout!

Then, I guess you will have those plants to look at but will still be dreaming a little longer about those tomatoes, Kate. Try to be patient . . .

Congrats!!!!!

Last year I started my corn inside, it did just fine. I was told to be VERY careful transplanting though because they do not like to have their roots disturbed.

How far ahead of setting the corn out do you plant them inside? Sounds interesting. Might have to try that, got 3 different varieties this year for my itsy bitsy city lot......or was it 4 varieties?

If I'm not mistaken, we start them maybe 3-4 weeks before planting. It's essentially just to make sure we don't have any non-germinating seeds to leave holes in our block.
