I planted my onion sets on February 19th this year. They are coming up now. We've had snow, sleet, ice, and hail since then. Actually that was one event. We've had nights in the lower single digits. We had a three day-four night span where it never got above freezing. Those onions are growing.
Steve I have heard that they might bolt if they get cold. I think I see that in the onions I start in the fall and overwinter compared to my late winter/early spring planted onions, but not all that much. The few years I did that I really didn't see much difference. I don't know what the correct answer is, but the planting calendar I got from my extension office says set out sets in February and March in Arkansas.
I'm quite confident that if So Lucky puts out her onion sets now, they won't freeze and die. Whether or not they bolt I don't know.
