I planted my onion sets on February 19th this year. They are coming up now. We've had snow, sleet, ice, and hail since then. Actually that was one event. We've had nights in the lower single digits. We had a three day-four night span where it never got above freezing. Those onions are growing.

Steve I have heard that they might bolt if they get cold. I think I see that in the onions I start in the fall and overwinter compared to my late winter/early spring planted onions, but not all that much. The few years I did that I really didn't see much difference. I don't know what the correct answer is, but the planting calendar I got from my extension office says set out sets in February and March in Arkansas.

I'm quite confident that if So Lucky puts out her onion sets now, they won't freeze and die. Whether or not they bolt I don't know.

An onion bulb has neither a left nor a right brain.

An onion set is a bulb. There should be no internal conflict as to when it begins to grow to start its season.

An onion set may be allowed to make up its own mind as to when it would choose grow for its own maximum benefit. Wise men once said (probably in reference to onions), "Ob-la-di, ob-la-da life goes on bra - La la how the life goes on."

So Lucky may make up her mind to have me shot.

Onions + silliness = TEG
Only here, lol
As it happened, I did end up planting the onion plants yesterday. It was more a matter of fearing they might not live much longer if they didn't get planted.
Today is supposed to be another nice sunny warm day, then rain mixed with snow tomorrow. Good grief! :barnie We'll test this no-freezing theory.

OMGosh, I forgot about my onion sets and left them in their farm supply store plastic bag. GOOD THING--the strongest ones had already started their roots, so I got to pick the healthiest for their spots. Bought a few more today and I'm gonna do the same thing.
