So they were in a raised bed? They grow well ? I wanted to try in my SFG, but was afraid they needed to sprawl too much...
I cut back some vine and got them going good and strong. I picked the fruit down to 2 per vine! This gave me a great product.

I also grew some, on the ground NOT in a raised bed and didn't keep the fruit in check... they took longer to ripen, some broke off the vine before they were ripe enough to eat, and the big sadness... not very sweet fruit.

So the trellis ones gave me a LOT less fruit, but I think with better flavor and ripened quicker.

I tried with the watermelon to, but was so busy all summer I forgot to trellis those and just let them over grow into the garden walkway and all around my corn.

I only did Hale's Best Cantelope.

So when you say you "cut back some vine", you mean you cut back the sprawlers so that all the plants energy stays in one or two vines and the fruit produced?;)
