Sgt Shultz's love of strudel, he was such a lovable character (for a concentration/POW camp...)
Dad's brother Ed was a paratrooper and shot through the leg during D-day invasion. Dad said that this occurred before he had even reached French soil.

He recovered but was taken out of combat. Instead, he served as a guard in a POW camp. Besides the purple heart, he came home with a momento made for him by a German prisoner. It had his name on it.

For all I know, it could have been in exchange for a couple of packs of cigarettes but he was a caring person. He had a role in caring for both of his father and mother during their final years in Sacramento, more than 20 years apart.
