Thanks everyone! Well, I went to a shop today and of course stopped to look at the cameras... Yep, I bought one! I told the lovely salesman (who spent ages discussing the different cameras with me) what I want to do and asked him to recommend something in the Canon/Nikon range. He suggested a Canon PowerShot SX50 HS. It has a fixed lens, 50x zoom, excellent flash for outdoor pics and so on and so forth... I haven't opened the box yet, so that's all I can tell you so far. We just came back about an hour ago and I am too tired to play now, but as soon as I do I will come tell you all about it :)

From what I've seen and heard it sounds like a nice camera though and definitely an improvement on the the Sony we have. The 50x zoom sounds amazing! Bonus is it takes high definition videos as well, which is something our Sony completely didn't get right. The video quality on that one is so bad, I don't know why they bothered.

Hey that's mine! Congrats, you will love it!!!! @seedcorn - it is 50x optical zoom, and goes to 100x using a digital zoom. All in a simple, fixed lens design - i didnt want to swap out lenses, and wanted something userfriendly. I think its great!!!

P.s. we got an extra battery right away. They take a while to charge, and if i'm out taking pics all day i can easily use both batteries.

@NwMtGardener Thank you! :hugs I keep looking at this thing thinking I paid sooo much for it, I hope I'm going to love it! I feel much better now. It cost more than twice what I originally planned on spending, but it just ticked all the boxes for me. I guess you can say I was sold LOL

Congrats @sumi !! After seeing many amazing photos from @NwMtGardener, I'm sure you will love your new camera!

I'm leaning toward that one also, the only con I can find is the special battery. The Canon I have now takes AA so you never have to worry about a dead battery. But I guess if the charge lasts long enough and you have an extra one that should work.
DH said just do it... I think so I forget about him breaking the tractor (and looking at a new one )

@Lavender2 I think I'll just keep an eye on the battery and make sure it's charged when I need it. Hopefully it will last long between charges! I don't know if I'll get away with buying another battery now, so soon after buying it and a memory card and a special bag to carry it in... ;) Not a new tractor, but close!

I've played with it a bit, without taking any pics yet, just ran through the options and "what happens if I press this button?" and I really like it so far. I also went outside and maxed the zoom and goodness, that thing has ZOOM. I love it! After my Sony, it's bliss.
