The computer in my Honda said it was due for service. I took it in today and just looked over the bill. I was charged $72.67 to replace cabin filters. I have had cars since 16 and never heard of a cabin filter, what is it ?

Air conditioner or heater filter, often behind the glove box. It filters dust, twigs, and honeybees out of the air before the air enters the passenger cabin. In some models it isn't all that hard to replace yourself, in some it can be a pain. It's probably too late but you could ask to see it and see how dirty it is. How old it is or miles isn't all that important. If you drive in a dusty or high pollution area it needs to be changed more often than if drive in a cleaner environment. Hopefully your vehicle's computer was measuring air pressure on both sides of it to see how much it was plugged.

They are found in a lot of the later models and can be really nice if you have allergies. Older model cars don't have them.

Check out the model and year. You can see the cost. I assume the retail price is Honda's price. To take the one on top, I assume for a 2015 Pilot, Honda is asking $36.60, the most expensive I saw. The price at this site, the first I checked, is $25.69.

I'd have to spend some time researching to confirm it is the right one (these things can get a bit tricky) but it looks like NAPA wants $19.65 for it online. The link did not copy right.

At $100+/hour plus parts at retail (plus environmental disposal fees) not hard to get there.

Curious, how much does someone have to make to live decent in NY?

My husband will usually get an estimate first and then check youtube. It's amazing how some things are really simple to do (at least to him) and how much the estimate was. He has saved us bundles just doing little things himself.

In all honesty, I've had cars for 50 years now and it's only recently that I learned about the cabin filter myself. That's really surprising since auto shops like to try to pressure women into replacing everything and anything on the assumption they are ignorant of their vehicles.
