Carpenter Bees

Can you give them their own house to live in? I know there are kits you can buy. It is just a thought.

Aren't those "houses" for mason bees?
Yes they are. Unlike Mason bees carpenter bees dig their own nests into wood, and there tunnels can get long and deep. Mason bees use old holes they find.

Aren't carpenter bees the same as bumble bees?
I thought they were the same. :bee

Carpenter bees are the big fat bees with the yellow dot on their head.

You do know they're good pollinators don't you? Many suggest putting chunks of wood up on poles near or in your garden to attract them. In other words, give them their own housing and hope they move out of yours. :hide

Hi KC, we're probably neighbors! As I wrote, I put out lots of plants to attract the bees this year, but they have dug holes every 6 inches in my roof rafters... a bit scary!!!

My original idea was to give them their own coop/building to nest in... so I guess that was fine thinking as it's been suggested several times.

Thanks everyone!

Hi Dawn - I've seen you over on BYC. A few of us from East TN. got together in April for a meet and greet at Crackerbarrell in Alcoa which also included a clandestine rooster transaction in the back parking lot. We had so much fun that we're going to have a picnic in June at one member's home. Watch the Tennessee thread for time and place. Hope you can join us.

It's easy to over react to carpenter bees. They don't actually eat the wood like termites. The hole they bore does no more harm than you would do if you drilled a hole to pass a wire through a board.
