i need to get carrots in the ground this year, i didn't have enough space tilled last year for them. i have soooo many different colors i bought last year expecting to get those going and they never got done.
i'm expanding more and more spaces each year so this year i HAVE to give them space too!
I'm going to do a temporary raised bed for my carrots & a few others. 12" boards make the frame & secure it with rods on the outside to keep the boards from tipping over. Then when the seasons out Ill break the frames down.
This is the plan because I'm not 100% sure where I want to set up the frames at & don't have the resources to build enough frames.
I've got a bunch of carrot seeds coming this year. Including these http://www.territorialseed.com/product/12052 which I got just for my girls to plant. I'm not usually a hybrid person but these are REALLY cool. So we'll see
I was looking at those too Jared, very striking. They would make an interesting carrot salad, mixed in with orange and yellow carrots.
The Magic Molly potatoes I grew last summer had that same deep purple color all the way through and a satiny shiny skin.
They hold their dark color when cooked too.
i have 3 different purple carrot varieties i got the past couple years, Cosmic Purple, Black Knight and Purple Haze. i'll have to add Purple Sun to my want list now! let me know how well they do for you!
i want to get some of the yellows too. i've had them in a mix a few years ago but they were puny and didn't do that well that year.
I stumbled onto the purple sun when I was looking for purple potato varieties. If I didn't have my daughters I would have just ordered cosmic purples but when I saw the purple suns with purple cores I had to do those instead. I've already ordered atomic reds, Danvers half longs, Jaune Obtuse du Doubs (a yellow variety) & snow whites all from Baker Creek too. My oldest daughter loves carrots so we'll be planting a bunch this year.
