Has anyone been reading about using charcoal for soil building? Scientist have found that the rich black Amazon soil was intentionally fertilized with charcoal over 1500 years ago and it is being sold today as "black gold" soil. Unlike compost, it can last thousands of years in the soil. Google "charcoal soil" and do some research, it's really interesting.

Never really heard about that, but I planted a flower garden over an area where the previous owners burned trash in a big drum.I know they used chunks of coal, which is different that what you are describing I think.
That soil was really black and I was always finding hunks of coal. Everything is growing there but I am not sure if it has anything to do with the coal.
Its an interesting concept.
