I grew up in SoCal and grew up eating chayote. So when I moved to Louisiana I was amazed that they are called miritons here. Anyway they grow well here and I need to hurry up and plant some. I am just waiting to find a see source.

You have to plant the whole fruit not just the seed. Plant it with the wide end up and just below the soil level. The sprout starts at that end.
It likes rich soil, full sun and normal garden watering. Never let the roots dry out but don't let it get waterlogged either.

So did you just plant the whole fruit from the market? They have a special Louisiana mirilton project that I should be getting a fruit from next year. Apparently they grow real well here but since the storm (Katrina, she is the focal point of everybody's life) the Louisiana mirliton has been hard to find and often grown any more. So the project is aimed at brining back the original type/variety and the number of them grown.

I just planted the ones I got from the market. I know there are two kinds. One is smooth and the other is prickly like a cucumber. The smooth one is the only one we see around here. I don't know if there's a difference in taste or not.

I planted the whole squash. I actually have found that by leaving it in a plastic bag on my counter and forgetting about it for a while. ;) It sprouted on its own. I planted it and it grew vines about 6 to 8 inches then died. I am not sure what happened. I am in the process of trying again.

Thanks, gina
