Actually I've had a few free horses. Two were long yearling colts.
I got them as halter broke and started them under saddle. One was a gorgeous Arabian who the breeder just didn't have time to finish, and the other was a Thoroughbred/Quarter whose teenage owner lost interest in and her parents were tired of paying his board.
They were both healthy beautiful horses with good minds.
But free horses require as much money for upkeep as any other purchased horse.
