Actually I've had a few free horses. Two were long yearling colts.
I got them as halter broke and started them under saddle. One was a gorgeous Arabian who the breeder just didn't have time to finish, and the other was a Thoroughbred/Quarter whose teenage owner lost interest in and her parents were tired of paying his board.
They were both healthy beautiful horses with good minds.

But free horses require as much money for upkeep as any other purchased horse.

On the other side of thistlebloom's coin ... years ago, we purchased an acre of land just outside the city limits to build a house on. The former owner left 3 ponies at close of escrow. I contacted the former owners to come get their ponies. They said they are for our kids... enjoy. Well, these 3 were ponies from H E L L !!!!! :duc and NO ... no rescue would take them ... too mean and dangerous :rant

@bobm do you think those ponies where mean because of temperament or could it have been environment ? I would think it safe to say some who abandons 3 animals probable didn't treat them well from the start. Only ponies I have ever been around where for kids rides.

The former owners bought the ponies for the grandkids when they were just about 2-3 years old and too young to be broke to ride. They took them to a horse trainer 2 years later who couldn't train them successfully, then turned out to pasture . We were the unlucky inheritors of them 4 years later. If you go out to the country, you will find quite a number of ponies that have to be rebroke to ride before the kids or grandkids get to ride them come summer- time after the winter off. Or the kids get too big to ride and whoever gets them after that. :hu
