I have a huge bush of cherry tomatoes and a huge bush of the yellow/orange cherry tomatoes. I need to do something with them before the gofers get to them and I don't want to waste them to the chickens which is funny and cute, but I'd like to use them. Is there any kind of recipe that I could make them into and can and save? Or even freeze and save? There are too many for just us to eat on salad.

You can halve them, roast them down to about 1/3-1/2 their original size, then run through a food mill (to remove skins and seeds) and can as sauce. (Actually they're pretty good just to EAT, halved and roasted like that).

Even easier, but less tasty, just smash 'em up in a pot and boil a little while, then run through aforementioned food mill to remove skins/seeds and can as sauce.

Some cherry tomatoes are said to dry pretty ok, if you have a dehydrator or other means of drying them.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat, just ate our first tomato of the year yesterday although it was a tad underripe, woo hoo

I have frozen cherry toms whole in baggies and then tossed them into recipes calling for toms over the winter... they are fresher tasting then the canned tomatoes from the store...also made salsa with them...anything you can do with your big tomatoes you can do with the cherries...

I put them in boiling water for 30 seconds, dump into cold water and then pop them out of their skins and use those to make my own tomato sauce rather then the big tomatoes.

I also use the firmer cherry tomatoes with some larger ones and romas to make salsa!

Mmmmmmmmmm

You mean there is another recipe for cherry tomatoes other than 'popping' them?

LOL, Popping them in your mouth!:lol:

I really hadn't ever thought about saucing them since they are so small already. I usually do the whole or cut into a salad, or skip the salad entirely.

Did you manage to grow any other kind of tomato?

I see nothing wrong with growing food to feed your livestock. This would probably benefit your eggs too. I personally grow many things here in my garden specifically for use with my animals. I do watermelon for them. I do melons. I do carrots and greens. I share all of my fruit tree production with my animals. These include lovebirds (11 of them), parakeets (6 of them), chickens (15 of them), and 2 rabbits.

Most times they are sharing their produce with me.

If I do not supplement from the garden then my feed bill feels it.

Here;s something else I like to do with them.... (I use these for sauces too)

I put a whole bunch on a tray, cover in olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic and basil.... let it sit in the oven at 200 degrees for a few hours and 'sun dry'. They are super YUMMY!!!!

My favorite with the cherry toms is to slice a whole bunch of them in half, add a can of black olives, basil, and feta cheese. Dress with balsamic vinegar and oil. It is really good and uses a lot of tomatoes- because you aren't adding lettuce, etc. Enjoy!

Oh, I do give them garden goodies all the time, I love watching chicken soccer when I give them cherry tomatoes especially! I just wanted US to eat them too, LOL. Thanks for all the great replies, keep 'em comin'!!!!
Pat: How do you "roast" tomatoes? Is it an oven setting? Is it a certain degree? How long? That sounds like it would be very yummy!
