I've gotten bitten by the chicken bug too. that math thing is just crazy. I currently have 19 birds. I need to have about 10. i'm getting too many eggs and haven't learned to sell them yet.
I've got a rooster I need to put in the pot. I still haven't killed a chicken yet, after going on two years w/chickens.
Bay, did you pluck yours or skin them?

it sounds like you had a lovely day.

BJ, I skin them. They are going into the stew pot anyway, so I don't need the skin to deal with. One of these days I'm gonna have to do the whole dip n' hot water thing, pluck the feathers out. I can just picture my backyard.........like the aftermath of a feather pillow fight. LOL

I just processed my 2nd round of roos just this past Wednesday. Being a city slicker.....it is definitely new territory for me.

Good for you!! :thumbsup Give yourself a pat on the back. You raised them and fed them, why GIVE them away to someone else that is going to eat them? You know how they were raised, you know what they ate and you can provide a good meal for your family. I have chicken and rice soup simmering on the stove right now from one of the old hens I butchered yesterday. Smells sooooooo good!

The young family I sold 3 hens to yesterday got 2 eggs this morning and were so excited! The 3 year old twins ate them. I have made another chicken convert........... BWA-HA-HA-HA!!!!!!

bay, I got your message. it wouldn't let me reply. said your inbox was full. I can't thank you enough & come around mid October, i'm going to call on your expertise. I've dreaded killing a chicken for SO long now. I will be really glad when the first couple are behind me. once I learn, I can pay it forward to the next chicken :gig

I deleted a few messages so I can receive communications again. LOL I will be glad to help you any way I can, it's just doing that first one. I still have that little twinge when I butcher a chicken. So it's not like you are some big softie, cause most of us are, we just have to get over the first step.

The chicken soup was delicious last night for supper!

My recommendation is to start with the mean roosters first. Usually I am relieved to see them gone. :p

I've been hoping this one rooster would attack me so I would feel better about sending him to the chicken coop in the sky. he must be reading my mind, because he is behaving like a gentleman. darn it
