And once they *are* red, if you want them you'd better get them pronto because at least around here they are a pretty hot commodity among the birds. Chokecherries and shadblow/serviceberry/amelanchier/whatever-you-call-it are the only two things around here that you virtually NEVER see ripe fruit standing in the tree
