@SPedigrees pardon my laughter at a 30 minute drive to get to the farmers market. For me, a 30 minute drive is my normal. There is a small blinking light community with a dollar store, convenience store, post office and that’s about it, 10 miles away. Anything else is 30-40 minutes in either direction. I’m in a rural county with one town large enough to have an actual traffic light, in fact it has 2 of them! The other towns have blinking lights, including the county seat.
Pretty much the same here. One town 30 minutes away and another 45 minutes. Little community five miles away has a small grocery store, elementary school, health clinic, hardware store, dollar store, convenience store and two restaurants. Used to have a post office but it's been "temporarily closed" for almost a year now when the building owner wouldn't renew the lease. Farmers market happens once a week during the warm months but I rarely make it there.

When I moved here as a young bride of 18, it still was a pretty tight-knit community but I worked 60+ hours for many years and didn't get to enjoy it much. The majority of the older folks have passed away and many of those homes are in disrepair. I used to regularly walk the full two miles in either direction of our road with no worries and now I won't take my daughter any farther than the houses of a few neighbors.

I'm in my early fifties but spent a lot of time with my grandparents and great grandparents in my childhood and for that I'm so grateful. My parents were pretty strict and disrespect was not tolerated. I remember the first time we visited friends of my parents and their kids cussed their grandmother. I'm sure I had a look of horror on my face as I would never have contemplated such a thing.

Mom was very cautious about pillows and we slept without them until adolescents. For decades, I thought that a  firm pillow was the only worthwhile choice. It was a 'pillow.'

Several years ago, we bought new mattresses and they came with 4 pillows, 2 firm and 2 soft. I tried a soft. Perfect ... or, nearly. I can change it to firm just by pushing it together. It can be shaped so that my head, jaw and neck have maximum support. That's very important for comfort when I decide that it is time for me to sleep.

When we are young, we can  crash. That isn't so easy for us as the years pile up. I need as much temporary comfort as possible to fall asleep. Later, it can't be maintained and some measure of consciousness returns. Unfortunately, age brings me back awake every few hours but, at least, I have a pillow to punch in frustration.
