Container melons?

Has anyone grown watermelon in large containers successfully? I am planning on it, with a trellis, but would love to hear successes/failure stories...

I haven't but i'm sure it can be done. Although watermelons do get very long roots so not sure if a container would work. Other members should have a better explaination of this.

I think with enough care anything can be grown in a container. The biggest problem would be ample water cause containers dry out faster. And then soil nutrients so if your using like a miracle grow then you should be find.
And I think melon plants are just gorgeous with their rampant vines.

Instead of Miracle Grow, would frequent composting be ok? How often do you think?

Oh yes, Melons love rich soil with plenty of compost mixed in. Just add in some compost to the planting site or container where you'll put the melon plants should do it. I'm sure you could mix in some more compost to the plants as they grow but being careful not to cut the roots off.
