I plant mine 4-6 inches apart. You are supposed to leave 12 - 18 inches but I agree that is a waste. My soil has never had any problem supporting the plants that close. The I plant my rows 2.5 ft apart. Just enough room to get the tiller through.
And another thing that I have been doing and now my husband is on board and helps with, is once it has gotten about 1-2 ft high to start hilling up the dirt around the base of your corn. It will keep it from getting blown over as easily. I had started doing this for support and then my husband saw everyone else having to stand their back up once or twice a week he started helping out.
