A wife once bought in her portie and asked for a lion cut. A lion cut is, the back legs and back from rib cage is shaved to skin while chest and front legs are left long. I hate the cut, looks like a lawn mower did it. Well her husband picked up the dog, wife forgot to tell him about new look. When the husband saw the dog he went crazy. Then he thought he was on one of those shows with hidden cameras. Had to disappoint him he wasn't going to be on TV.

Hahaha, I just gave our mongrel Lucy a lion cut, and YUP looks like a lawn mower did it! I just do it for practicality - she hates clipping or brushing, she sheds like crazy. So once a year she gets a "half" haircut, in a couple months she'll get a "whole" haircut, ears back. The the rest of the year it just grows and grows.

Those trimmed evergreens and topiaries look good in an appropriate setting. I agree, Mary, it does lend an "English Garden" feel to the garden. I bet yours looks very elegant.
My DH trims the "foundation planting" yews every year around July 4th. I wish he would just let them grow, but I guess they would overpower the house in a couple of years. I have tried to imagine what else could go there, but it would take heavy equipment to get them out by now.
If nothing else, they provide a good place for the chickens to hide in. We once had a family of stray kittens live in them.

I've always hated those shaped bushes. They look so fake and unnatural. :sick Maybe they have their place, but it's nowhere I want to be.
