Good for you helping out less fortunate. I every now and then lend a hand or help someone out with money. A lot of the people are in that situation through there own doing like drugs or crime. But also lots of them have mental illness which holds them back from making proper decisions. I help out only when I feel it from mental illness and the families have given up on them, you can usually tell which is which.
