Hi there! :D How about clover? It's good for the ground & you can till it in later. Chickens, if you have them, love it & it's very good for them. Its a nice green to look at as a bonus. Good luck! :D

For a wild thought, consider blackberries. There are certainly some downsides as it will become a jungle, but they like poorer soils and should do well in your climate, both on the hillside and in he flood plain. Just think, blackberry cobbler or blackberry jelly.

And I certainly agree with Pat, talk to your extension agent. That's a better sopurce than any of us here for knowledge about your local conditions.
