I'm having a crawfish boil today and was wondering if I should compost the heads. I read that they make excellent compost, but due to the spices and salt that goes into the boil it may not be such a good idea.

Murphysranch...I learned to do this from her. But the heads are raw not cooked. Took me awhile to find them. Finally found them in a korean market.

Did you have to buy the heads? Down in San Jose at Lion market or some of the larger asian markets, they have fish heads, but I just wasn't willing to buy them and then haul them 3 hrs back up here! Reminds me of that song about fish heads or was it fish eyes? :)

Southern Gardener - I would not hesitate to try it. I don't think the spices would have any lasting effects in compost. One thing that I would try would be to smash the heads and try to break down the exo-skeleton to aid in the breaking down process. Now, you must ship about 15 lb. of boiled mud bugs to me as soon as possible for me to do some research. They must be shipped in a heated package and suitable for head sucking. I will not charge you for the scientific research :drool

We lived in NOLA for a while and I quickly fell in love with your table fare down there. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Murphysranch...yes, I had to buy them. They were 50 cents a piece and I had to elbow some people to get to them. :D

LOL Smiles! Well I got your message to late! We had a blast on Saturday. We boiled close to 200 pounds and most every bit was eaten. I have a little left over so I'm going to make an etouffee.

I did put the crawfish heads in a wheelbarrow and rinsed them twice - I'm glad I did - should have seen the spices that washed off! I left them to dry on a screen last night and will crush them up tonight when I get home and add them to the compost.

P.S. - I'll send you some etouffee!
