Cutting and/or killing tree roots

I took my neighbor some eggs and berries,and while chatting I mentioned the roots going under the driveway. She said it was OK for me to cut them. So I guess I will do that when I buy an axe. If we ever get around to a new drive I will see about barriers if they even help.

I was digging on the other side of the yard about 5 feet from where we used to have a tree.I had it cut down because it was to close to the foundation.That was about 3 years ago,and the roots are still going strong underground!
