Before we ripped out the old cattle fencing we had a few deer close to the back of the house, once in awhile.
I think that my newer 5' high horse pipe fencing, where the horizontal (and vertical) pipes are about 1-2" diameter, are both a deterrent to horses jumping and a deterrent to deer. It casts shadows and I think messes up their vision. Not that the horses are afraid of the fencing. They lean on it, just like they will lean on anything.
