I think Mary nailed it. Around here that would be consistent with grasshopper or blister beetle damage, but I don't have hostas here so I don't know what bugs might attack it. But slugs, oh yeah.
That's deer on the stems that are just stubs. The holes in the leaves are probably slugs or snails.
A weed whacker would have taken them off uniformly from the side.
Slugs killed off about half of my hostas last year before I figured out what was happening.
This year, I collected pine cones from all over the yard and covered the hosta bed. Not a single sign of slug nibbling!!! Guess they don't like to scratch up their tender little bellies. <evil laugh>
